Terumo Acquires Onset Medical

January 16, 2012—Terumo Medical Corporation (Somerset, NJ) announced the acquisition of Onset Medical Corporation (Irvine, CA). Onset, which will be part of the Terumo Interventional Systems business unit, is a developer of access sheath technology for multiple, minimally invasive clinical applications in cardiology and urology.

According to Terumo, Onset has developed small sheath profiles with large internal diameters using its Controlled Deployment Technology (CDT) platform to protect against unnecessary access-site or arterial trauma for the patient. The CDT platform will complement Terumo's product line of entry-site management and lesion access technologies.

Terumo stated that it will market Onset's complete product lines, which include the SoloPath balloon-expandable transfemoral and transseptal catheters. These devices incorporate expandable and collapsible sheath technology for aneurysm and structural heart repair. SoloPath provides an access platform for complex, large-bore procedures, including thoracic and aortic endovascular aneurysm repair and transcatheter aortic valve implantation. Onset products also include the Pathway balloon-expandable PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotomy) sheath and the Pathway balloon-expandable ureteral access sheath for performing procedures such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy in the removal of large renal calculi.
