Stentys' New Stent Delivery System Launched in Europe
September 26, 2012—Stentys (Princeton, NJ) announced the European commercial release its Self-Apposing stent, an enhanced stent delivery system used in the treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and complex coronary artery disease. The new catheter for implanting the Stentys Self-Apposing stent adds a hydrophilic coating and an ergonomic handle that facilitates stent implantation in tortuous vessels.
Stentys noted that the European Society of Cardiology's latest guidelines on AMI treatment call attention to the importance of selecting the appropriate stent size, as the vessel in this setting is contracted and contains thrombus, and to the complications that may result from inappropriate stent sizing.
The company says that the Stentys Self-Apposing stent addresses the "stent-sizing dilemma" by fitting into the contour of a blood vessel; its shape and diameter adapt as the vessel dilates and the initial clot dissolves during the post-AMI phase. The device is designed to adapt to vessels with ambiguous or fluctuating diameters, particularly in the postinfarction phase, in order to prevent malapposition. In the APPOSITION III clinical trial, Stentys stents demonstrated a very low 1-month mortality rate among 1,000 high-risk AMI patients when compared to recent studies with conventional stents, according to the company.
