Reduction in Patient Radiation Exposure Shown With Corindus' Robotic-Assisted Intervention

May 18, 2020—Corindus, a Siemens Healthineers Company, announced the publication of clinical results from a comparative study between robotic percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and manual PCI. The study found that robotic PCI with the company's CorPath GRX system reduced patient exposure to radiation by 20% compared manual PCI with no increase in fluoroscopy time or contrast utilization.

Tejas Patel, MD, et al published the findings online in Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions. The study is a propensity score-matched analysis of a large cohort composed of 996 patients. Of these patients, 310 underwent robotic PCI and 686 underwent manual PCI. Investigators sought to measure air kerma, dose area product, fluoroscopy time, volume of contrast, and total procedural time.

“These findings further represent the benefits of robotic-assisted intervention, particularly for patients,” commented Dr. Patel in the Corindus announcement. “The application of vascular robotics has shown other benefits through added precise device manipulation, and now, creates a safer environment for patients. I am honored to share my experience with the clinical community and to offer the benefits of this technology to my patients.” Dr. Patel, who serves as the lead investigator of the study, is Chairman and Chief Interventional Cardiologist of the Apex Heart Institute in Ahmedabad, India.

The company noted that interventional cardiologists experience the highest amount of radiation exposure of any medical professionals from fluoroscopy systems used in cardiovascular procedures.

The CorPath GRX is designed to protect physicians by removing them from the radiation field and has been shown to reduce radiation exposure by > 95% in the PRECISE study. Dr. Patel’s study data demonstrate that robotic intervention also provides significant health benefits to patients by limiting radiation exposure as compared with a manual procedure, advised Corindus.
