Fogarty Institute for Innovation Announces 2014 Advanced Endovascular Training Fellowship
December 11, 2013—The Fogarty Institute for Innovation (Mountain View, CA), in conjunction with the Norma Melchor Heart and Vascular Institute at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, California, and VIVA Physicians, Inc. (San Jose, CA), has announced that it is accepting applications for the Advanced Endovascular Training Fellowship that will run from July 2014 through June 2015.
Applications will be accepted through the institute's website, www.fogartyinstitute.org, until February 14, 2014. Applicants will be notified if they are finalists on February 18. Finalists will be scheduled on March 7 for interviews. Inquiries should be directed to the Fogarty Institute for Innovation at (650) 962-4560 or Fellowships@FogartyInstitute.org. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have board-certified or board-eligible, training in interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, or vascular surgery. A California Physicians License will be required for those selected into the program.
The Fogarty Institute for Innovation is located on the campus of El Camino Hospital. Its educational activities involve teaching the skills and methodology necessary for medical innovators to translate their ideas into new patient therapies. Companies affiliated with the institute have access to the clinical experience and clinical trial management services available through the collaboration between the institute, El Camino Hospital, and the Taft Center for Clinical Research. Currently, 12 companies are in residence at the institute.
According to the Fogarty Institute, selected fellows will have the opportunity to work alongside some of the leading endovascular experts in the world. The program offers cardiologists, interventional radiologists, and vascular surgeons the chance to broaden their expertise in vascular disorders. The 1-year fellowship conforms to Accreditation Council for Graduate Academic Education guidelines.
This advanced fellowship provides an interdisciplinary opportunity for postgraduate physicians to gain intensive experience in structural heart and endovascular interventions. Fellows will interact broadly and collaboratively with interventional cardiologists and radiologists, as well as vascular and cardiac surgeons. Clinical cases span all vascular beds from neurovascular, complex thoracic and abdominal aneurysms, critical limb ischemia, venous interventions, percutaneous aortic and mitral valve technologies, and many more. The program also has a strong emphasis in research and clinical trials.
Fellows will be exposed to the latest medical innovations at the Fogarty Institute for Innovation while working closely with some of Silicon Valley's brightest biomedical device engineers and entrepreneurs. Additionally, fellows will have time to refine their clinical skills, participate in didactic conferences, and interact closely with mentors in their respective fields to tailor the experience to meet their individual needs. The fellowships are intended to provide access to innovation and collaboration across a broad range of disciplines that will allow physicians to become the endovascular leaders of tomorrow.
In the press release, Kavi Krishnasamy, MD, commented, “After completing my interventional radiology fellowship, I was selected for one of the Advanced Endovascular Training Fellowships. Not only has this fellowship allowed me to learn new techniques and further refine the endovascular skills I acquired in my primary fellowship, but it has provided me with an enormous amount of vascular experience. From patient presentation to device usage, the cases we managed during the fellowship run the full gamut of therapeutic options.”
