Biotronik Launches the 3Flow Aspiration Catheter In Europe

November 13, 2012—Biotronik, Inc. (Lake Oswego, OR) announced the launch of its 3Flow aspiration catheter in Europe and other markets that recognize CE Mark approval. The 3Flow device is designed to facilitate quick and accurate thrombus aspiration. The company, which is headquartered in Switzerland, noted that thrombus aspiration significantly improves clinical outcomes in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients and has received a IIa recommendation in the most recent guidelines from the European Society of Cardiology.

According to Biotronik, the 3Flow catheter's features include a 60-mL locking syringe and a large inner lumen that allows for a longer aspiration time and the extraction of larger thrombotic particles. A hydrophilic distal coating and a smooth tip design ensure that the proximal thermoplastic polymer shaft provides optimal deliverability and kink resistance.

Henrik Schneider, MD, from the University Hospital in Rostock, Germany, commented on the device in the company's press release. He stated, "The large syringe doubles the aspiration time compared to standard 30-mL syringes, which avoids switching syringes in many cases and allows better focus on the accuracy of the procedure. At the same time, the large inner lumen catheter allows for aspiration of larger thrombotic particles and causes less blockages."
