Baylis Medical’s VersaCross Large-Access Solution Used in First-in-Human Procedure
July 29, 2021—Baylis Medical announced the first clinical use of the VersaCross large-access solution, which will enable the delivery of a broader range of therapy devices for electrophysiology and interventional cardiology procedures.
Devi Nair, an electrophysiologist at White River Medical Center in Batesville, Arkansas, performed the first-in-human case with use of the VersaCross large-access solution during a cryoballoon ablation procedure with the Arctic Front Advance device (Medtronic).
According to the company, the new solution is designed to optimize tissue dilation for large sheath procedures accessed both at the groin and through the atrial septum, including left atrial appendage closure, transvenous mitral valve repair, radiofrequency (RF) ablation, and other emerging left-sided therapies. After dilating the transseptal puncture, the septum is primed to enable a large-bore, therapeutic sheath to cross and reach the pulmonary veins for cardiac ablation.
Baylis Medical stated that the device includes a 3-in-1 RF wire, which features Baylis’ RF puncture technology, is paired with a seamless shapeable dilator. The electrode-tipped wire acts as a starter wire, a transseptal puncture device, and a 0.035-inch exchange wire in the left atrium, without the need for device exchanges.
“The transition-free dilator used in conjunction with the sturdy 0.035-inch RF wire helps enable seamless delivery of the cryoablation sheath and system,” commented Dr. Nair in Baylis Medical’s press release. “This new solution helps address the ongoing need to simplify transseptal workflows involving large access sheaths, which have emerged as a standard part of my practice.”
