Abbott’s CardioMEMS HF System’s New Patient-Access Capabilities Approved by FDA
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- FDA-approved updates for CardioMEMS HF system allow patients to view pulmonary artery pressure readings through the CardioGuide HF app.
- A new Dynamic Treatment Plan feature enables clinicians to create personalized medication adjustment plans based on changes in pulmonary artery pressure.
- Medication adjustment instructions can be delivered directly to patients through the app under plans established by their care teams.
October 5, 2026—Abbott announced FDA approval for updates to the CardioMEMS heart failure (HF) system that enables new patient-facing capabilities through the CardioGuide HF app.
According to the company, care teams can allow CardioMEMS patients in the United States to view their pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) readings directly on their smartphones, giving them greater insight into their condition and helping them take a more active role in their care.
The new capabilities also include Dynamic Treatment Plan (DTP), a software feature that allows clinicians to set up personalized medication adjustment plans based on changes in a patient’s PAP. DTP can send medication adjustment instructions directly to CardioMEMS patients through the CardioGuide HF app, noted the company.
Abbott advised that it plans to make CardioGuide HF app and DTP available later this year.
Abbott’s CardioMEMS HF system, which is intended to reduce HF hospitalizations and mortality risk, measures PAP through an implanted sensor in the pulmonary artery to help identify signs of worsening heart failure and guide treatment.
Andrew J. Sauer, MD, cardiologist and Vice President for Research at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Missouri, and Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, commented on the approval in Abbott’s press release.
“Heart failure can worsen before patients notice shortness of breath, swelling, or weight gain,” stated Dr. Sauer. “PAP readings can help identify changes earlier, giving care teams an opportunity to adjust treatment before symptoms develop. By giving patients access to their pressure trends and personalized guidance from their care team, the CardioGuide HF app can help patients better understand their condition, understand why treatment adjustments are recommended, and take a more active role in managing their heart failure.”
