Abbott Initiates TREAT TR Postmarket Study of the TriClip TEER System

July 28, 2026—Abbott announced it has initiated the TREAT TR postmarket study of the company’s TriClip transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) system for the treatment of tricuspid regurgitation (TR). The first patient in the study was enrolled by Xavier Freixa, MD, and his cardiac team at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain.
According to Abbott, the prospective TREAT TR study is designed to evaluate the safety and performance of TriClip in a real-world setting and build on the body of clinical evidence that has established the system’s benefits for patients with TR.
The company stated that the study will enroll approximately 1,000 patients at up to 100 sites in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Patients will be followed for 5 years with checkups at discharge, 30 days, 6 months, and 1 year, then once annually for the remaining 4 years.
Additionally, Abbott noted that a select group of patients will also be enrolled in a substudy that will evaluate the potential for the TriClip system to reverse cardiac remodeling.
“Prior to TriClip’s availability, many patients with TR had few treatment options because medical therapy didn’t relieve their symptoms or they were at an increased risk for conventional open-heart surgery,” commented Anita Asgar, MD, in Abbott’s press release. “Through multiple clinical studies and in working directly with patients, we’ve seen that TriClip can have a profound impact on the lives of people with TR, and we’re excited to see additional evidence to support this minimally invasive device.”
Dr. Asgar, Coprincipal Investigator of the TREAT TR study, is Section Head of Interventional Cardiology and Medical Director for the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, Structural Heart Program at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.
