Cardiac and Vascular Societies Provide Guidance and Resources Regarding the COVID-19 Pandemic

March 17, 2020—Medical societies associated with endovascular and interventional cardiology have been responding to the evolving situation regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic by taking measures and issuing guidance for the particular needs of these physicians, their staff, and their patients.

  • The American College of Cardiology (ACC) COVID-19 hub is available online here.
  • The American Heart Association (AHA) COVID-19 resource site is available online here.
  • The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI) President, Ehtisham Mahmud, MD, advised on March 16 that SCAI and the ACC Interventional Scientific Council would be issuing a joint statement on the COVID-19 pandemic. "Catheterization Laboratory Considerations During the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic" by Frederick G.P. Welt, MD, et al was published online in Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

On March 17, the AHA announced the publication of “Role of the American Heart Association in the Global COVID-19 Pandemic” by Mitchell S. Elkind, MD, et al online in Circulation.

On March 16, Dr. Mahmud published an open letter to SCAI members titled, “The Evolving Pandemic of COVID-19 and Interventional Cardiology,” that discusses the challenges of the situation and provides his account of procedures taken at University of California, San Diego, where he serves as Professor and Division Chief, Cardiovascular Medicine, and where seven COVID-19 patients had been admitted in the previous 72 hours.

Also on March 16, SCAI stated that it was seriously considering recommendations from the CDC and the federal government state of emergency. As of March 16, the society advised that the SCAI 2020 scientific sessions will take place as planned on May 13–16 in Atlanta, Georgia. SCAI will continue to monitor the situation in the best interest of the health and safety of attendees.

On March 6, SIR announced the cancellation of the SIR 2020 meeting that was scheduled for March 20–April 2 in Seattle, Washington.

On March 9, ACC announced the cancellation of the 2020 ACC Scientific Session together with World Congress of Cardiology (ACC.20/WCC) that was scheduled to take place March 28–30 in Chicago, Illinois. However, on March 13, ACC announced that a free virtual experience, beginning March 28, will feature live access to 23 education sessions consisting of late-breaking clinical trials, featured clinical research, awards, and keynote lectures. The New England Journal of Medicine has posted a collection of articles and other resources related to the COVID-19 outbreak, including clinical reports, management guidelines, and commentary. It is available here.
