Looking Ahead

By Azeem Latib, MD

It is with huge pleasure and honor that I take over the medical leadership of Cardiac Interventions Today, a publication that I have had the privilege of working with for many years. As a brief introduction about myself, I trained in internal medicine and cardiology in Cape Town, South Africa. I then did my interventional fellowship with one of the masters in our field, Antonio Colombo, MD, who remains a mentor and friend. I had the opportunity to learn and grow in Milan, Italy, for many years where I cultivated my interests in innovation and structural interventions.

Recently, I moved to Montefiore Hospital in New York to serve as the Medical Director of Structural Heart Interventions and the Heart Valve Program, where I will be pursuing my interests in complex coronary and transcatheter structural heart interventions. The greatest joy and success in my career thus far has been the opportunity to interact and collaborate with colleagues from around the world and to be able to call many of them friends.

I believe that having had the opportunity to work as an interventional cardiologist on three different continents during my career thus far, will help me in my new role as Chief Medical Editor of Cardiac Interventions Today. However, the one strong link that joins us all no matter where we practice is our desire to learn and stay current. In this regard, Cardiac Interventions Today offers a very simple but effective formula—timely, relatively short, and easy-to-read reviews written by experts from around the world. The success of this publication and the large readership (> 18,000 global subscribers) is largely due to the medical leadership of Ted Feldman, MD. As Ted embarks on a new direction in his career, in which all of us at Cardiac Interventions Today wish him success and happiness, he leaves very large shoes to fill. Fortunately, he has left a very healthy publication with a worldwide readership, supported by an excellent editorial and production team. We will continue the formula of providing our readership with well-written and current reviews on topical subjects in cardiac interventions.

As the new Chief Medical Editor, I have introduced a new Step-by-Step Technique section. In every edition, we will highlight an interventional technique that will be described in a step-by-step fashion, including tables describing procedural steps and equipment needed, and a short online video showing the technique. While this article is not intended to replace training or proctoring for specific techniques, we hope that it will become a useful reference and adjunct for learning a new or novel technique.

As always, the editorial team welcomes your comments, criticisms, and suggestions regarding current and future content.
