SCAI Responds to CMS's Proposed 2018 Reductions for Percutaneous VADs in DRG Assignment

June 29, 2017—The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) recently announced that it had submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding the 2018 Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) Proposed Rule.

According to the society, SCAI is strongly concerned that in the 2018 Inpatient Prospective Payment System, CMS proposes a 35% reduction to the diagnosis-related group (DRG) rate for percutaneous ventricular assist devices inpatient claims (MS-DRG 215), believed to be resulting from the transition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding system from ICD-9 to ICD-10.

SCAI also expressed support for physician-owned hospitals, opposed the public release of inspection reports by accrediting organizations, and stated it would work with CMS regarding the appropriate DRG assignment for new myocardial infarction ICD-10 codes expected to be approved in October. SCAI will continue to monitor these issues of interest to SCAI members, advised the society.

The SCAI letter to CMS is available online on the advocacy section of the society's website.
